Comment on What if Reasonable Doubt had been a mixtape? Would Jay-Z still be 11 albums deep and considered the greatest of all time if In My Lifetime, Vol. 1 had been his first official “album?” by Kunal

I think if you examine BOB, there's also another purpose of current mixtapes. I think its to show diversity and ability to extend into other genres - Wale got a ton of buzz when he flipped Justice remember? Back to BOB... when his album came out, it in some ways disappointed his really core hiphop audience, but probably satisfied the hell outta his label. I think the pressure to deliver an album of a certain format also helps understand why artists release the mixtapes that they do.

Also, I would contend that - as you mentioned - Drake's So Far Gone really changed the mixtape game. Simply flowing over other's instrumentals was now unacceptable. You had to take your mixtape to the "album" level. In his case, I think this helped him prove that he could make the album he wanted because he sold out shows, etc as you mentioned. Why try to fix something that's not broken?

Now, Drake is definitely a unique case...

It's going to be interesting to see what happens with BOBs No Genre mixtape. I think the strategy with him as artist has been very interesting. I think he gives the real heads his best hiphop for free. Then he crafts a pop/commerically appealing album for the masses. Will this give him the best chance to sustain?

Nice, haven't heard that Supaman Lova melody in a while. My favorite rapper throughout my youth, he remained concurrently underground, respected and successful throughout much of his career. Unfortunately, he made a few detrimental decisions towards the end of his tenure, Malpractice and Red Gone Wild, yikes. And, of course, that awful sitcom with Method Man. I'll support Reggie though.

Comment on KiD CuDi’s album is incredible. It makes you understand why Kanye f*cks with him. Here’s his performance of Maniac with The Roots on Jimmy Fallon and a couple of other choice cuts. by Here’s some bonus KiD CuDi. It’s not included in the album but it fits right in. The video is called Mojo’s So Dope (but I’m sure KiD CuDi was not inhaling…). « Ambrosia For Heads
